Weekday Workout: The Father
How God Parents You—and How We Reflect Him in Parenting and Mentoring
Day 1: The Father Saves — Be Redemptive
Scripture:
John 1:12–13; John 8:44
“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God…”
Focus Attribute: Redemptive
Reflection:
We aren’t born as God’s children—we are born again as His children through Jesus. His parenting begins with redemption. We must remember that every soul under our care—child, teen, mentee—is in need of a Savior first.
Emulate This:
Be redemptive in your parenting. Don’t just correct behavior; point to the Redeemer. Offer the kind of grace that invites return. Let your parenting be a picture of the Gospel.
Day 2: The Father is Present — Be Available
Scripture:
Matthew 6:5–15; Romans 8:15–16; Galatians 4:6
“Your Father who sees in secret… Abba, Father.”
Focus Attribute: Available
Reflection:
Availability isn’t about hovering. It’s about being present when it matters. The Father is not overbearing, but always near. Children thrive in environments where they know their parents are there for them no matter what.
Emulate This:
Be the parent who is consistently available. Let your presence speak louder than your rules. Be the kind of mentor who notices the silent prayers and hidden fears.
Day 3: The Father Pursues — Be Compassionate
Scripture:
Luke 15:11–24; John 14:23; 2 Corinthians 6:11–16
“But while he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion…”
Focus Attribute: Compassionate
Reflection:
Compassion isn’t soft parenting—it’s Spirit-filled strength. The Father’s embrace didn’t erase the son’s sin, but it overwhelmed his shame. The son returned because he believed his father still loved him. The consequences of his actions in this case were enough for the lesson to get through.
Emulate This:
Run toward your child in their brokenness. Practice compassion over condemnation. Teach restoration, not rejection.
Day 4: The Father is Gentle — Be Approachable
Scripture:
Matthew 11:28–30; Matthew 12:18–21; John 6:37; James 4:6–10; Psalm 145:8
“A bruised reed He will not break… I will by no means cast out.” “He will not quarrel nor cry out, Nor will anyone hear His voice in the streets.”
Focus Attribute: Gentle
Reflection:
Are you the kind of parent your kids can confess to? Can they cry without being dismissed or silenced? God doesn’t crush bruised reeds—He binds them. This isn’t to be soft parenting but understanding what your child needs when he or she is truly hurting.
The Father isn’t yelling to be heard in the street. Haranguing your child and belittling them wins no hearts and will ultimately lose them.
Emulate This:
Be approachable. Let your children know they can come to you with anything, and you’ll walk with them—not away from them. Gentleness disarms and builds trust.
Day 5: The Father is Faithful — Be Consistent
Scripture:
Hebrews 4:14–16; Jeremiah 31:3
“I have loved you with an everlasting love… He gives more grace…”
Focus Attribute: Faithful
Reflection:
Consistency in love, in discipline, in affection—builds a secure foundation. God doesn’t parent based on mood. His love is covenantal, not conditional.
Emulate This:
Be a faithful parent. Keep your word. Show up, again and again. Let your kids and mentees see a reflection of the unchanging, unwavering love of God.
